For a guy whose entire purpose of living is blow shit up and rip (demon) guts out, Doomguy is surprisingly human in the 2016 game, and I'd say he is the most human character in the game.
I loved his little bro-fist interaction with the Doomguy figure, and let's not forget he hesitated when blowing up VEGA. VEGA is still blown to smithereens, but not before he backed up the system.
Don't know much about the old Doom games, but as a casual player, I really liked this character. I'd say he has a heart of gold.

He loved his rabbit at least, enough to go on a rampage to avenge his death at the end of doom 1.

The originals didn't really take themselves all that seriously. It wasn't as tongue-in-cheek or self-aware as serious sam or duke nukem, but was still a bit cheesy on purpose.

According to the original Doom manual, the reason he was assigned to the outpost on Phobos where shit goes to Hell (heh heh) is because he assaulted his superior after being ordered to fire on civilians.

The first third of Doom II revolves around trying to rescue what's left of Earth's population so they can evacuate.

At the end of Doom 64, after destroying the Mother Demon, Doomguy decides to remain in Hell to make sure no demon has a chance to rise again, presumably leading up to the events of the remake.
So, yeah. Doomguy's always had a heart of gold.
