I got a chance to try out one of my offices' ruinously expensive book scanner. On the plus side, I now actually have real experience on using it, and how well it works. Not bad at all! Completely non-destructive doujin scanning, right to the edge of the page is completely possible, with only a little stretching, but not creasing, of the spine, due to pressing up to the edge with a clear presser plate. But since I didn't have the most idea lighting or equipment to properly flatten it out, I had to do a bit of post in photoshop (perspective warp does wonders). If I ever end up buying it, I'll probably be able to get better results. Of course, the raws are 6x the size of the ones uploaded here...
Unfortunately, I didn't get too much scanned to completion, as I was trying out a variety of doujin sizes and bindings and whatnot to see how well it works. I really need to find a place that I can test out a flatbed-style one though - but even they have issue getting riiiight into the spine without doing damage to it.
Either way, expect a few more scans from me later. Don't actually know when I'll be able to get access to that scanner again, since I'm not at that office all the time.
