In the italian mafia, or at last in the ancient one, there was a strong sense of honor and respect, and one must respect the leader (the padrino) in order to gain his favor (do not discuss his orders, his role of leader, or even his way of act, because he is the founder of the Famiglia, some sort of sacred role; but, more than anything, never humiliate a Padrino in front of his family, in any circumstance). A demonstration of no respect, even by a comrade, is a death sentance, because, despite the apprearence, there is a code of honor in Cosa Nostra (in fact, many families required to be a practicing catholic to be accepted in the Famiglia, and many picciotti were forced to go to church every sunday).
