The S/U/J/P trap (like that thing under your sink) is supposed to prevent insects and other bugs (and sewage odors) from entering.

True. My bathroom sink "S" trap had a leak. Since then 3 centimeter cockroaches crawled out from it. Before getting it fixed I had to cover all sink holes to avoid unpleasant surprises when I turned on the light.
