Unless she's wandering near the surface, that is. If a standard-weight golf ball (45.95 grams) dropped from the height of 20 meters, which is almost equal to 8-story building, it will reach water after 14.7 second (rounded up) with the terminal velocity of 1.37 m/s after counting air resistance, and delivers 9.01 joules of energy...equal to a thumb-sized pebble thrown at you at full swing by average adult male. BUT! If she was deeper in the pound, the water will acts like barrier that dampens that energy, slowing it to normal after roughly 45 centimeters in.

How deep she was swimming or basking would depend on the depth of the water hazard too, I imagine.

So that's why young mermaids are forbidden to approach the surface in Hans Christian Anderson's novel.
