Traditional Japanese hot water bath is stoked below with firewood from outside the house. A makeshift open-air version would be described basically as "a barrel filled with water and heated over a fire."

Older baths were warmed by wood-burning stoves, often directly beneath the bathtub itself. (See the diagram here for an example.)
