"What? You heard some loud cussing from this way, followed by some screaming? We were just playing a game. Huh? Blood all over the place? I have no idea what you're talking about, ze~♫"
Oh, it gets worse than RNG when the game is new and there are bugs aplenty. I was playing an Ironman game of XCOM 2 on the second hardest difficulty, and I've had that save going for almost the whole month. I was finally doing great, nearing the end of the game. Then, the final objective on a minor story mission glitched out, and one of my soldiers got stuck inside it, so I couldn't move them, and the objective became unreachable.
There were no more enemies in the level, and I had no more grenades, so the soldier couldn't die, and the level had no time limit, so I couldn't run out of time, and I couldn't abort the mission, because you do that in X2 by extracting all your soldiers to the skyranger... but since one of my soldiers was in perfect health, with no enemies around to kill them, the skyranger would wait there forever. It's set to Ironman, so there's no emergency save file to fall back on. Even if I turned off Ironman, there's no save file from before that point.
And that was how I lost my Ironman save file.
...or so I thought. A few days later, I remembered that I could enable the console and restart the level manually with a command. Oddly enough, that caused ALL my soldiers to be unable to move once the level restarted, but since they all started the level inside of the skyranger's extraction point, I could extract, abort, and retry. They could move again after that.
And that was how I almost lost my Ironman save file.
