The reason behind Danbooru's note system (as opposed to hard translations where the image itself is altered) is to allow corrections and fluid change. While we encourage translators to be fluent in both languages before attempting, mistakes will always happen. So, corrections are encouraged but if you aren't a Japanese reader and make a big enough correction that the meaning of the phrase might be altered, put a check_translation tag on it.
