    Hang in There, Kogasa-san 1870

The hole's in a position where you can't put your strength into it properly, and the hole itself is just barely big enough for the ingot to pass through, so unless you've got a fair level of grip strength, it's impossible.

Firstly, just holding the ingot vertically is an obstacle.

Incidentally, I hear that this ingot's current market value is ¥62,000,000. Approximately $527,250 or €484,040.

Gotta be the Steep Wall. Everything else I'd probably be useless at.

My father had an uncle, who could have done this *easily*, if it wasn't for the fact, that his hand probably wouldn't have fit through the hole in the box...

It would be the same for me. The bag I carry daily is easily over 15 kg and I have gotten so used to it I could lift it up with one finger without too much strain. Though admittedly we are talking about a gold ingot with flat surface and a lot smaller volume. It would be a lot harder to get, but I am sure I could within the given time (given that I get my hand through that is ^_^,

Now, I'm just curious and I don't know the physics involved, but yeah, the flat (and probably slippery from countless sweaty hands) surface is a problem too. Do you think someone strong enough could squeeze the bar enough to leave marks to help their grip, gold being soft as it is?

Given the fact the gold bar has to be lifted and held straight in the air for a few seconds, you'd already be putting a lot of strain on your arm and possibly shoulder. The real trick is the size of the hole, it's a very tight fit, and it's most likely aimed so that having to get it out is the trickiest part. I'd assume that you could user the case as a sort of support, but in actual practice, it's probably a very basic manouevre you'd have to perform with your wrist that gets it out.

Indeed, move it up to the glass, push against it and try to put a finger underneath the gold bar, just a tiny lift from that could give you the required hold. I suspect that would be the best method if it was sweaty/grimy from all the people touching it.
