Those are all characters from the new movie, and they're all as short as Katyusha, despite being in high school.

Actually, short stature people have been preferred/mandatory on tanks in most armies since the advent of tanks. Most had/have some sort of official height cut-off. It makes sense, because as you said, they fit in those vehicles better.

Especially alot of Soviet and Chinese Tanks who had a notorious height requirement.
