Basically speaking, The Tale of Bamboo Cutter is a derived work of The Story of Chang'E, similar but different in some aspects.

I don't think they're similar at all. Bamboo Cutter is about a moon princess who got sent to Earth and grew up there before returning to the moon, while Chang'E is born on Earth and floated to the moon from drinking the immortality elixir.

There's also Chang'E being married and the plot revolving the ten suns, none of which are found in Bamboo Cutter.

On the side note, Kaguya's name in Chinese is pronounced "Huei Yen."

Like I said derived, it's not going to be the exact same story. Of course there won't be someone shooting down ten suns in Bamboo Cutter, and there won't be Chang'E demanding for impossible tasks to reject marriage. They're both enchanting beauties, related to the moon, have consumed elixirs of immortality (though with different reasons), held high status on Earth before going to the moon.

Count me wrong for saying similar but different in some aspects, it's more like different in lots of aspects, but there should be no mistake that parts of Bamboo Cutter was referencing to The Story of Chang'E.

Being moon-themed isn't enough to say they are derived from each other. Artemis of Greek mythology is also related to the moon, not to mention having characteristics that are comparable to those two (being a goddess usually means held in high honor, immortal, and attractive), but that alone doesn't make it related to Chang'E or the bamboo cutter story.

You mean Hui Ye. Or Hui-yeh if you prefer Wade-Giles.

    Joseph Campbell would disagree.

Joseph Campbell's claim to fame as an academic is the idea of the monomyth. Ever heard of the Hero's Path? That was his idea.
