Actually, it's kind of both. During the Night Battle of Guadalcanal, Yuudachi engaged Juneau in a point blank gunnery duel and got in a devastating torpedo strike before Juneau could get off more than 30 rounds of 5-inch ammunition.
Mind you, Juneau was an Atlanta-class cruiser so while doing the math on just how long the engagement took and how far away Yuudachi was, I started to run out of swear words to explain how bug[REDACTED] crazy she was.
Her second torpedo salvo was directed at Portland but according to my research, all of those torpedoes missed. (Though the crew of the Portland might not have realized that ¬.¬)
Oh Yuudachi was a ship She killed many a man She attacked Guadalcanal But that big hunk of "Poi" That shot Mrs. Portland Had laid poor Yuudachi to the sea.
It was Thursday night The moon was shining bright We attacked Guadalcanal The US Navy didn't spot us for many miles away Until there was a big shoot out at Guadalcanal! Yeaaahhh!!!
Whoah, Yuudachi was a ship A friend of Japan She would never see the empire suffer pain (No, no poi) And with her sister Shigure, Harusame and Murasame They caused chaos on Guadalcanal
