Course they have cruiser scale armor belts that will set off AP shells meaning if you hit the engine area you can do tens of thousands of damage a hit, it's a trade off but if I'm close enough to have a reasonable chance of placing the rounds mid ship I honestly load AP and shot for the waterline on most CVs.

I think I prefer HE mainly because not killing a CV right away, but making it incapable of actually doing anything, punishes the lazy map-clicker who's driving it more than just sinking him would. :)
(NOTE: Joke. The author does not actually condone griefing carrier players in World of Warships. Even if they are lazy map-clickers. :)

Well, the arrow didn't turn into a squadron of Zeros before it hit. Maybe they have a minimum arming distance, like air-dropped torpedoes.
