    Hang in There, Kogasa-san #1679

I seriously turned pale when I noticed. I really do think I'm not very used to this. So why the heck did I plug it in!? :-)

It's been a long time since the site's stopped accepting uploads and note edits right as this strip was supposed to be posted, long enough that I've been caught up doing something else until well after the problem gets fixed.

Afraid someone else will have to handle these for a while; I'm going to be out of town from tomorrow through next Monday, then again Thursday-week through the following Monday. I might be able to do tomorrow's, but I doubt it. I'll catch up best I can in between.

Reader-added tags include "Unmindful Stabbing = Breakage" (U (Ukkari ) S (Sasu to ) B (Bukkowareru )), "Upper? Sole? Blockhead, wrong way" (U (Ue kana? ) S (Shita kana?) B (Bakame, gyaku da )), and "Self-disconnection".

The survey's on hold with tech support:

    Why's the PC broken?
    • Room's too hot
    • Overclocked it too much
    • Messed around inside it while it was plugged in
    • Lightning struck
    • Someone's living in it

If it's that bad, you'd better all the exterminator.

USB have 2 pairs of wires - 1 is power (+5v, ground) and 2 is data.
Depends on what exactly connected wrong.

If switched data pair. If tl;dr read "conclusion".
Didn't found any english link for swapped power pins.
If power pair switched and/or power wire enters any data pin - it'll burn device. 5V, 100 mA (500 mA if device negotiated) provide 0.5 (2.5) W of power which is deadly for integrated chips when connected wrong. Data operates voltage in mV range and ~5 volts can devastate data port on chip.
Basically there is no protection because in normal circumstances it impossible
    to connect otherwise.

Devices that use external power source AND doesn't charge/power via USB cable is protected by design - it use only data pair. Examples: printer, externally powered scanner, etc.

Kogasauthor didn't draw all devices, so it hard to say if wrong connected device dead or not.

He’s most likely using USB 1.1 or 2.0 and splendidly short-outed the power pins of the hub/PC/tablet, maybe even causing a four-way short-out with the data pins too.

Explanation: The four USB 1.1/2.0 pins (power and data) of the device’s plug are pressed to the back of the socket’s connector and nothing bad should happen there. Unfortunately, the host’s four USB 1.1/2.0 pins are most likely pressed against the metal shielding of the plug, shorting them all out. If it was a USB 3.0 plug, the host’s power pins would be connected to the device’s SuperSpeed data pins, maybe breaking the device, but not causing a short-out, so I’m guessing it’s a USB 1.1/2.0 plug.

If the host’s power supply pins (+5 V and ground) are shorted, what happens depends on how well designed (or expensive) it is. Cheap crap: something gets fried forever. Good stuff: short-circuit protection trips and switches off all the power before anything breaks. High-end stuff: the USB port’s overload detection switches off the port until the short-circuit is removed; nothing else happens.

tl;dr: The tablet’s short-circuit protection tripped and nothing broke.

All I did was plug in the USB, so why'd it suddenly cut out!?
