    Hang in There, Kogasa-san 1667

I hear they call this "phantom power".

Lyrica-san's explanation isn't far off the mark, so even though it's not quite accurate, I think it somehow conveys what you're dealing with.

Step-recording MIDIs that I'd copied by ear is about the extent of my work with sound, so I had no idea about any of this. As it happens, up until now, I'd been jamming them into "plug-in power support" plugs, so I'd apparently been succeeding by pure chance.

The type of mic Kogasa-san's holding comes with a power supply unit included, so I escaped any difficulty.

Reader-added tags consist of "MIC lecture (beginner's class)" and "I see. I don't get it."

Props to the survey this time:

What item do you want for your cosplay?
    • Suika's horns
    • Okuu's control rod
    • Kanako-sama's shimenawa
    • Momiji's sword and shield
    • Kogasa's umbrella

Note to future karaoke monsters: When you're setting up new equipment, remember to Read the Freaking Manual.

As for the survey... any of those could work, depending on the cosplay.

Ehm, not gonna look too tech-savvy, but do really ALL condenser mikes need external power source? From what I know and see in stores, the majority of them needs a preamp, not a power source!

Any good mixer should have phantom power for those kind of mics. I'm pretty sure it will lead to just switching phantom power on or moving the mic to an input with phantom power.

Pretty much all professional condenser mics need phantom power, as the preamp is built in to the mic. If you're used to PC mics, most microphone jacks have some kind of power available, even if it's not used by the mic itself.

I'd imagine most mixers support it as well, even the cheap single mic Behringer mixers support it. I can't imagine anything remotely professional not having it, but yeah usually there's a switch.

The one he’s holding looks like a boundary mic and they can be pretty finicky about voltages. I had one that was expecting only 18V and tried to run it off a normal 48V phantom power, it didn't work too long.

If that's one of the standard Audiotechnicas that I have used in the past, it should be fine with multiple voltages as long as it's 2 mAh.

The mixer and mic that Kogasa-san bought have arrived.
That mic's a condenser mic, so it can't pick up sound if you don't plug in a power source.
For comparison, say you have a mic where you blow up a balloon and it picks up vibrations on its surface.
    Whaaa!?
I thought they all worked just by connecting them to the machine...
The air is your power source, you see.
    Wowww.
    There's no sounnnnd!
    Whyyyy!?
    Huh...really?
    Condenser
If you don't put in the air, the balloon won't inflate, and it won't be able to pick up sound.
    Those are dynamic mics.
