Reimu and Marisa both still had more 1st place votes. I guess Koishi was a lot of other people's second pick.
Why do so many people put so much importance on internet popularity polls, anyways? Those things are way too easy to spoof with proxies and fake accounts. I still remember that gameFAQs character battle where a tetris piece won that way.
Edit: Just hit me that I'm being a turd in the punch bowl here. Sorry, but these popularity polls make me uneasy. They always feel like everyone's getting judged like pieces of meat.
Koishi received a large jump in popularity thanks to Hopeless Masquerade, especially when being tied into the incident. She had been riding that wave since, and her part in ULiL was enough to make the final push.
Reimu's reign-mu has ended. Probably gonna be back to normal for the next poll but still, I never would've expected her to be beaten by Koishi of all youkai.
I voted for her though and I'm happy she got 1st. Koishi best 2hu.
I feel like everytime these polls are made you always get some random character who usually only ranks at about 10th place or worse, suddenly rise to the very top for seemingly no reason, only so they can drop back down to where they were before one or two polls later (Alice, Sanae, Yuuka, etc).
Also, some of the results this time around seem pretty dubious. Never in my wildest imaginations would I have expected a character as obscure as Renko (whom there are many touhou fans who have never even heard of), to outrank characters that are as iconic to this series as Cirno, Suika, Chen, Suwako, and Utsuho. I get that this is mostly because Urban Legend in Limbo made her more relevant recently, but it still seems strange seeing as how Sumireko, the actual character that she got tied to (who happened to be the game's final boss no less), only made it to a measly 47th.

Fan polls are fan polls. They're not that big a deal to get riled up for. It's just for fun.
I say that Renko might have gotten popular because of the new girl who shares the same name from the new game. Whenever new characters with similar mysterious story show up it usually interest the fans to find out more and even like the existing character.
Also, just because a few characters are well known and popular doesn't mean people will always like them. I never was too big a fan of most that you mention, especially Cirno who I think is overrated. It's nice to know that there are still people caring about the rest of the characters rather than mindlessly choosing the ones that everyone likes or is everywhere.

Actually, for the last few years I noticed a rise in the amount of fan works for the Hifuu Club members. I suppose people just started to like them more.

me, too and if you compare and if you look at the results of the last two polls, Renko has definitely been on a rise.
Also, Momiji is 21st again. Wish she'd be a little higher up, but I'm not complaining.
I just realized, Kasen actually *lost* popularity despite making it into an actual game. Biker Byakuren didn't seem to win anyone over either.
Kasen lives in a paradox, between been liked or hated if you think about WaHH, but the Oni's theories about her give her a plus yet. Being at the first 30th isn't that bad.
Byakuren was overshadowed by Sumireko and Mokou in that game.
But the character who scalated so much is Renko, but I don't complain, she is a interesting character so I hope she stays a little more on that place.
This time Sakuya shouldn't complain too much, she is already betwenn a Golden Sandwich, with a refined silver meat.

If it was a couple years ago when Kasen got into a game, like in Ten Desires which ZUN thought about, I'd wager she would be massive now (and she had already risen from 62 to 26 in the post-TD poll). Like 15-20 at least in that poll.
She's still very popular, but with the slow development and bimonthly release schedule of WAHH I wonder if some aren't simply losing patience, and that's why she's losing popularity. I don't mind so much. It's not about the reveal and perhaps never was supposed to be. It's the journey with each reveal of how devious she truly is and eventually how she got to that point. It's not necessarily a secret since many characters know her nature already. But I can see why some might just want ZUN to sort of get it over with already. Some really don't have the patience to stick with manga for that long even if it is Touhou.
Actually, Quwanti is correct. The commentary doesn't say first place, it says something about Part 1. There's a post of Satori by the same artist and with the exception of the name the commentary is identical.
