All I have to do is think - 'How would a little girl talk?', and then put that in.

Japanese has less 'silly' words for children than English; from my experience, it's mainly on mispronunciation (such as chuki/suki shenshei/sensei) or the use of onomatopoeia to describe things (wanwan/dog nyannyan/cat) - the excludes just having a limited vocabulary, of course.

So for ボロボロ (in a tattered/disheveled state) I started with 'ruffled' being a simpler word that a child, and usually referring to hair (linking it with the 'perm' comment later), then reduplicating it to make it more childish - hence ruffleduffle. Rumpledumple could have worked too, but I felt ruffle sounded nicer.
