Could the zook actually do squat against something big like a King Tiger?

More I would worry about the suicide distance. Can't be more than 10yards.

Do it the old fashion way:
Throw a couple of grenades down the hatch

The real question here is why is the commander sticking out of the hatch in a still active area? Dudes just asking to get sniped.

Because it makes for a heroic propaganda shot ;)

For the same reason why there is no ammo belt being fed into that top mounted machine gun.

An ammo belt less than a foot long? You'll have to excuse my skepticism.

The MG42 is fed from the left side and a belt is dangling from the exact spot one would go (albeit short). But yes, there is problem with this. Fact is, there shouldn't be an ammo belt nor even a MG42 at all.

For single person operation you would use a drum canister. A belt would be unwieldy not to mention further dirty the weapon while hanging off the side of the tank. But more importantly the Germans really didn't mount MGs on tanks anyway.

They learned in the beginning of the war that MG34s just had too high a rate of fire to be used on top of a tank. Plus the tank crewman couldn't change the barrels from the turret hatch which made the gun useless. So, in many later model tanks they didn't even bother installing a MG mount.

Looks nice in propaganda pictures and Hollywood though ;)

Actually in real life WW2 tank warfare, commanders would almost always be sticking out of their hatch even in the middle of a battle. This applied to both the allies and the axis.

War can be ridiculously hectic and situational awareness was often the top priority of anybody giving the orders. Tank commanders knew it was worth risking their safety in order to get the best view of the battlefield, if only to tell their crew where to go and what to aim at.
