  • From an update by Matt Hullum, co-founder of Rooster Teeth & co-worker of Monty Oum

    Monty Oum has passed away

Our friend, inspiration and co-worker Monty Oum passed away yesterday afternoon at 4:34 PM surrounded by people who loved him very much. Ten days ago Monty suffered a severe allergic reaction during a simple medical procedure that left him in a coma. Although he fought bravely, his body was not able to recover. During his time in the hospital he was well cared for and never in pain at any time.

Monty is survived by his wife Sheena, his father Mony, his brothers Woody, Sey, Chivy and Neat, and his sisters Thea and Theary, as well as a countless number of fans and friends. We were so proud to be a part of his life and we will miss him greatly.

Your generosity during the hours after the public statement on Friday will help his family deal with the costs of his care and his passing. You made an incredible difference during a difficult time and we cannot thank you enough.

As for honoring Monty, we will do that in our own way. In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you simply do something creative. Use your imagination to make the world a better place in any way that you can. If you know Monty like we do, then you know he would certainly be doing that if he were able to.

    Monty was 33 years old.

    We love you, Monty.

Indeed true. I couldn't believe it when I found out. Truly, he will be missed. He was far too talented and too young.

An another Space Cowboy rides into the sunset. Rest in Peace Monty. Though I wonder how this spells out for future of the series? Will they continue without Monty's guidance or stop the series out of respect?

I don't think they'd leave the series dead in the water, although they might cut it short and I expect season 3 will be delayed at the least. Monty wasn't the only writer or animator for RWBY so the series can certainly keep going without him, although Ren is going to need a new voice actor.

Or out of respect he'll suddenly go from being very quiet to damn near mute.

I gather from the podcast tonight that he's passed on enough of his thoughts and ideas to the rest of the team that it'll continue based on his global ideas. It's the visual styling and choreography that I see most impacted.

At first I thought that this was a bad joke.
First Otsuka, then Origa, now Monty...
This year started with a bang alright...

If what I heard was right, Monty left the RWBY group a while ago or rather they already had someone else working on it, like 2 other writer or something.

He might be gone but I don't think they would have to stop producing, similar to Strike Witch after Noboru's passing. At least, that's what I heard.

This fucker worked 18 hours a day, not because he needed to, because he wanted to. He's probably chilling in Remnant now, playing Kingdom Heart 3. May you find peace, and may your resolve never falter, Monty Oum.

Reading Ross and Arin from GameGrumps post about Monty, the guy is genuinely nice and humble person, with his attitude and dedication to his job and friends/family, to see someone like that passed away so soon...

They would continue it. Monty wouldn't want it to just die like that.

He was too damn young. I'd have said the same if it was 10 years from now, or even 25 years from now.

The RTAA's, podcasts, production diaries, and all his marvelous works. That's all I'll ever know of him, and like a million other fans, that's all I'll ever need to remember this man, a legend in his own right.

    Rest in peace, Mr. Oum.

I didn't even know who he was until I learned he passed away.
After reading both Arin and Ross's posts about him, I couldn't help but feel sadness about this.
To know how much resolve and determination he had, it really makes me want to work harder and make things instead of procrastinating and giving myself excuses.
I feel like I really missed out on someone exceptional, and wish I had known about him earlier.

    Rest in peace Monty.

You kidding me? Monty would come back from the dead to haunt the dev team's asses if his brainchild was left to die.

Judging by all these pictures and heartfelt messages, I don't think Monty is truly dead. His life's work, RWBY, will keep on living if us fans has anything to say about it.

And personally, I like to think that he would someday come back as some badass ninja cyborg. Scratch that, he would become THE badass ninja cyborg.

....Your legacy will live on Monty...

They say that you die twice. The first is when your heart stops beating. The second is when the world forgets you. And looking at things, the second time's not coming any time soon... if ever.

    "Allergic reaction"

Someting's fishy. What medical procedure did he need? And how did he die? Did his body shut down after the coma instead of waking back up or did the hospital give up and pull the plug?

9 months late in replying, but this made me laugh. And cry. Because it's true.
