That's not a G3, is it? I mean, parts of it looks like it, but it has been incredibly shortened. It's not a modification I've ever seen. Would you even do that to a 7,62 calibre assault rifle?

I'm pretty sure it goes by another name, but it is built on a G3 receiver so I call it that. It is real (although I'm pretty sure you have to contract them from a US company, not H&K) and I've seen them carried before but it is super rare because as you note it isn't practical. This was back in the days (when people believed 7.62x51 was the be all rifle round and that 9mm was far too weak past 50 yards and 5.56 had a cult following. Basically if you needed concealment, but more punch than a 9mm, this was an option. Again, this is all a mistake as 9mm actually can be used against someone reliably as far as 250 yards and 5.56 has pretty much the same terminal ballistics as 308 against flesh at close ranges with or without hollow points, mainly due to the frag potential.

There was a time when people were looking for a nice subsonic platform (big issue was that subsonic rounds could go supersonic if you used too long of a barrel length, which is why the AI L96 Covert was made) and I guess this may have been designed for that due to the short barrel, but what I have seen the most was 300 Whisper used as a solution in a manual action. Wilson Combat sold AR uppers, but they were ridiculously expensive while it only cost like $100 for a gunsmith to chamber a barrel for you, free if you had a department/company gunsmith already on contract to do it. Currently 300 Whisper is standardized as 300 AAC Blackout, the past history in professional use was a major factor to its SAAMI adaptation. Now 300 uppers are dirt cheap, you can build a 300AAC AR probably equal or cheaper than an AK (the two rounds are similar in performance when loaded supersonic, but blackout has more energy in short barrels and the ammo size is much smaller).

You can build one yourself, there really is nothing mechanically different to making an SBR G3 over a full length since it operates on roller delay. Or better yet, there are plenty of airsoft replicas of this setup which is more practical given the firearm is little more than an expensive novelty.
