That last one actually happened to a rather elderly computer of ours (Mac Plus we'd had for nearly a decade, I think.) One day, I smelled something burning and turned to see a thin line of smoke emerging from the top of the computer. After unplugging it, I found a blister near the top of the casing. Apparently, the power supply had overheated, so the poor thing committed suicide.

The most recent that I went through was ironically when my laptop hard disk finally went kaput after I mentioned it here in one of the past strips. I guess that would qualify for the "OS won't boot" answer. I've since gotten a new Solid State Drive to replace the old one (costs less than one of my figures, too) with double the capacity. Granted, it's a 9-year-old Toshiba laptop, so I guess it was more or less its time. Now it's working like usual, even better than before I guess.

I use Linux, so the 2nd one does not apply to me, and I have yet to receive a kernel panic for the past 5 years.
But i've had a case where my computer booted up to a file systen error and could not start up the OS. Running fsck trashed the file systen even more to the point where i had to reformat the entire hdd. Not fun.
The most epic was when i was plugging my Linux laptop for use in the office （we have a fairly liberal BYOD policy）and the power brick suddenly exploded with a loud *POW* and a huge bright spark. Definitely caught everyone's attention in the office.

I had one of those gaming laptops that had its own stand with a fan built in. One day, it stopped loading the OS when I would boot it up, and when my dad checked it, it turns out the power supply had overheated. We took it to a specialty laptop place that managed to fix it, but it stopped working for good about two weeks later.
The only time magic smoke leaked out of my computer was when I hadn't seated one of the RAM sticks properly. Unfortunately, I needed both of them to run my OS...
My Linux boxen have been pretty rock solid for the last couple of years. Undefined errors are the one completely unavoidable thing with computers unless you always do routine tasks only.
The weirdest problem I ever had was a typo in a configuration file for an unsupported video driver compiled with weird settings. I got the display rotated 90 degrees clockwise and the red RGB channel missing. I was just going to install another distro anyway.
