  • If there's someone that comes close to being a "big good" type character on the hero's side, Enterprise is pretty high there on the list. I'm not going to say much more other than you'll be seeing a lot more of her in the future. :)

As I was discussing world design with November and Zeroblaze, I made it very clear that I wanted a systematic world that made sense and could stand up to scrutiny. Given that one of our main themes revolves around civilization and the threats to it, I drew from many sources as I wrote up our abyssal fleet before our heroines.

Speaking of heroine, I think it's best that I explain a little about the design. The term "ship girl" (in Japanese or Chinese) has two important components: ship - symbolized by their historical achievements and connections to our "real world"; and girl - the characters themselves. Thus, it is important for me to consider both aspects in the process of designing a character.

Think of the Pacific "multiverse" in much the same as one rationalization of the KanColle game or the Cranes official light novel. Thousands of earths exist in parallel to each other, and each world is largely unique. Each ship girl is unique to the world she awaken in, and if a ship girl falls, she's gone for good.

All ship girls' history and memories, up to the point where she "awakens" and become a "real" human girl, draws from one singular timeline: that of our "real world." Afterwards, what happiness or misery she experiences in the future, what memories - sweet or melancholic - she forms, what love or loss she may find ...

All of that is now up to her. And of course, you, if you so choose to become involved in the defense of your world.

USS Enterprise (CV-6) is my favourite ship (sorry Missouri, I love you too but at least you are second) and this, damn, reinforces my love for this wonderful ship.

On another note, I like how jeanex put a reference to Halsey, who had worked with the Big E for most of World War 2 and attempted to save her after the war, here which is Enterprise's top line, "Hit hard, hit fast, hit often!" is a quote from Halsey

I'm not sure what universe the Yorktown is considered "small" in. The Yorktown class in overall length and beam was about 2 and 2.5% smaller then the Shoukaku class and much larger then any of the dragons. It was notably larger then any of the British carriers as well (somewhat less beam, but nearly a hundred feet in length more over the Illustrious and about 40 over the Courageous conversions and around 30 over Ark Royal). The only things she was notably smaller then were the four conversions done by the USN and IJN on their planned massive battlecruiser/ship hulls, but there was allot of pork in those ships and the air wings were unimpressive for their size.

Also the Yorktown class was most certainly not the first purpose designed US Carrier, the Ranger was, and that ship is a good example of a 'small' carrier being fairly similiar to the Dragons in size.

I think you answered your own critique with the first one. :) Contrast the Yorktown's displacement of about 20k tons with Lexington/Saratoga/Kaga/Akagi, most of which are 35k tons or more, and the Shokaku class that sits at about 25k.

Secondly, remember that you're reading the narration from the ship girl's perspective. Not to mention "honest to goodness" =/= purpose-built.

I didn't have space to expand on every detail of the character, but when Enterprise speaks of the historical Enterprise as the first "honest to goddess" carrier, she is quoting the header of the Yorktown class prospectus submitted in the early 30s.

Consider how quickly the navy backpedaled away from Ranger and how many problems were inherent in the Lexingtons, it's my opinion that the Yorktowns represented the pinnacle of the USN pre-war design. Hence, first "honest to goodness" (real) carriers that were meant for a new paradigm in naval combat, which we saw as early as 1942.

So if you've got a problem with Enterprise considering her historical counterpart as the first set of "real" USN carriers, take it up with her. xD

(My apologies, but details such as the above obscure references are for a group of folks who'd be familiar with the stuff in mind. It's not my intention for the writing to be obstructing. If you believe you have a better recommendation, please let us know - we fixed her equipment at the suggestion of the WOWS community, after all. :) )

Trivia (Note that for Enterprise, we ended up providing her with additional "commentary" instead) STEC notes that while this report has no space to cover all the achievements and records of the historical USS Enterprise, she sank 71 ships, damaged 192 or more, and downed 911 enemy planes during the course World War II. While luck may have been important, the statistics presented above - and the fact that she was the first night-battle capable carrier - speaks volumes to her extraordinary skill. The Enterprise remains the U.S. Navy's most decorated ship in history with twenty battle stars and innumerable awards. Humanity always has a need for heroes. Ship girls are no exception. More importantly, they need the hope that heroes bring. Enterprise is emblematic of that hope and more. Her existence is symbolic of all that is good within our shared humanity and of course, those same values that America was founded upon.
Yorktown-class carrier, CV-6, Enterprise. Hello, commander. I'm ready to do my part. Are you? They call me a hero, commander. Said that I singlehandedly changed the course of the war. But I'm no hero. I was, in hindsight, mostly just lucky. If someone told me that I would go on to have one of the most brilliant records of any ship in our navy's history, I'd have given him a pitying smile that's reserved for fools. We Yorktowns were the first carriers designed as honest to goodness carriers in mind. While we were manoueverable, we were small, and rather easily banged up. But you know all of that already, commander - I see it in your eyes. You had something else you want to ask. ... It's funny that you ask that, commander, and not about the war. How I felt when they refused to save me? I understand there's nothing that could be done for me. For a nation eager to forget the terrible war and depression of that first half of the century, it was too much to save me, a reminder of those terrible times. Besides, I think I would have rather preferred to remain in memory. They could remember me simply by telling those stories we had together. Steaming ahead at thirty-two knots, my flight squadrons in the air and guns blazing as we fought for everything we held dear... That, in my opinion, would be a far preferable fate. I'd rather be dodging bombs and torpedoes in a children's tale than to wither away somewhere as a tourist attraction. As I rotted away in the scrapyard, my "consciousness" faded. To be honest, I didn't care whether I was remembered or forgotten at that point. I was first born as a weapon of war, raised to be a defender of freedom, and my mission, insofar as I understood, was complete. I was content. For a soldier like me, I could not have asked for a greater reward than a job well done. Yet, as I disappeared, I began to dream. Inside those dreams, I asked and wondered about things I never would have thought of. As questions came and went, always there would be one that remained: what am I? I had a lot of answers to that question. When I finally acknowledged that I was perhaps more than a simple weapon and understood my purpose, I woke up, and here you find me today, commander. I dreamed of things - wondrous and terrible things, things that would require me to fight once again. Things that would threaten peace and freedom and everything that my sisters and I had once fought so long and hard to preserve. ... The price of freedom is high, commander. It always has been. Yet this is a price that I'm willing to pay. Even if at times, I am the only one. Then again commander, I'm not the only one, am I? You're here.
Creators' comments: - November: The idea for USS Enterprise came from the frustrations against Taihou... Tens of thousands of resources were metaphorically dumped into the sea, the catastrophic construction we dare not to see for ourselves. Thus, we left the place, held our pens, and let the Carrier loli who made us proud set sail. The ship body at her back is the container for her composite bow. - Morgane: As I mentioned from the point of view of STEC in Trivia, USS Enterprise is the perfect American shipgirl in my mind. Even if you abandoned her like the American citizens back then, she would never abandon you. She will do what fulfills her values without a word, without calculating her gains and losses, dangers, nor possibilities of getting hurt. - Zeroblaze: A true-to-the-name war machine with inconceivably good luck, the phrase "Luck is a part of Power" is totally applicable on her. Her hair grows down to her waist after transformation, so we also call her Magical Girl (woot).
