That's not an admiral, that's an IJA officer, Lieutenant Colonel (Chuusa) to be exact.

She IS army, and so is Maru-Yu.

Akitsu Maru is a landing craft. The army builds and maintains their own landing craft separately from the navy in most militaries. (Maru-Yu is a submersible transport for movement of army provisions and soldiers, as well. She's basically a landing craft that can submerge.)

The IJA had quite a few ships of its own, actually. Including other escort carrier/landing ships like Akitsu Maru's sister ship Nigitsu Maru.

I wonder when/if that one will be added to Kancolle.

The IJN/IJA as most of us know had a notorious rivalry with each other. It was ridiculous to the point that both had their own Air Force and Navy instead of having one unified branch like most nations.

Akitsu Maru and Maru-yu are IJA vessels. It would be incorrect to designate them as IJN. The renowned Zeroes themselves were designated for use exclusively by the Navy as the Army fielded the Ki-61s often.

It's nothing unusual for an army and navy to have their own air forces, that's how it was for the US in WW2 as well. To an extent the US Army and Navy still have that, though after the Air Force was spun off as its own service the Army's air assets are quite limited. And most nations have naval infantry of some sort; the US is unusual in having the Marine Corps even partially independent from the Navy.

An army with its own aircraft carriers and submarines, though? Yeah, the IJA was quite unusual in that regard. Unless you count China, whose navy technically isn't a separate service from the army at all.

True enough, I stand corrected, admittedly was groggy from sleep. Forgot about the renowned USMC as well. The Royal Navy themselves had an Air arm as well.

True each nation had its share of Interservice rivalry. But again at the very least they had little problem cooperating with each other compared to the venomous relationship between the IJN and IJA.

Also I know that it's for posterity's sake but is it correct to tag him as an Admiral? When clearly he is an IJA officer.

I suppose it's just me nitpicking but curious if there could be a better tag?

Probably not worth creating a tag for just this one image, unless there are others out there with an IJA officer in a Kancolle "admiral" role. Guess I'll just drop the Admiral tag.

When it came to aircraft guns, they used at least nine different rifle calibre machine guns (in 7.7x56R, 7.7x58SR and 7.92x57mm calibres), three different heavy machine guns (in 12.7x81SR, 13x64B and 13.2x99 calibres), five different 20mm cannon (all using different ammo) and three 30mm (also all using different ammo). The IJA could not use IJN ammo (even if they wanted to) and vice-versa.

The IJA used a 24-volt electrical system, whereas the IJN used a different voltage.

Mounts to hold guns, cannons and rocket launchers varied between the two services. By the end of the war, Japan produced at least 90 basic aircraft types (53 IJN and 37 IJA) and 164 variations on basic types (112 IJN and 52 IJA).

No wonder logistics was the Achilles heel of both.
