That periscope probably belong to Albacore. Albacore torpedoed Taihou, Vice Admiral Ozawa didn't cared much about the damage until it worsen and eventually caused the sinking of Taihou.

And about that Gargoyle thing, he was nicknamed Gargoyle because he was freakishly tall compare to the normal height of an average Japanese guy.
