Well, given that duels in Gensokyo are more about dodging than absorbing blows, it probably doesn't really matter what you wear.

Semi-random thought I just had, that sounded a lot like the school of thought about battleship armoring during the late 1800s, the "All or nothing" concept, where the important parts of the ship were armored and the rest of the hull they just stacked cork in compartments and hope the thing will still float after taking a few hits. The Italian battleships of the were especially guilty of that, though they were fast enough to dodge any engagement that they couldn't win...
