Magazines like that are called helical magazines. They work like a drum but are extended rearward to accommodate more cartridges.
I gotta wonder why they would attach a drum/helical magazine to an assault rifle and not just use a light machine gun.
I'm going to guess because SAWs tend to not have a single-shot firing mode. (That and an android would be able to manage sustained full-auto recoil with better consistency than a human soldier.)

Primarily because of faster reloads and MUCH better reliability. IWI's new belt-fed machine gun D- something, has a select fire option as well as being open bolt.
