During the Battle off Samar, USS Johnston managed to set Kumano on fire with shell fire and blow off her bow with a torpedo strike. Suzuya was later sunk by airstrike while trying to assist Kumano.A few hours after Guitarro's attack, USS Bream launched four torpedoes at Kumano but all missedUSS Raton fired 6 torpedoes at Kumano a few minutes after Bream's attack but again missed with all shots.USS Ray managed to take advantage of Kumano's evasive maneuvering from Raton's simultaneous torpedo attack to hit Kumano with two torpedoes.
