Is this something I should have seen the camrip to understand? Evangelion-style Christan pseudo-symbolism?
Or just a representation of Homura's long trek back and forwards in time, over and over until she'd finally save Madoka? Seems the obvious explanation, except Godoka is right there behind her, so that doesn't really fit chronologically.
Or actual Christian symbolism: Homura as the messiah? But that's Madoka, saving the souls of the Magical Girls. And it's everyone except Homura who comes back from the dead, too.
Noticing how Homura is walking to some sort of cliff edge, it seems she might be planning to throw the cross down there (despite being bound to it). If the cross signifies divinity, perhaps what she's trying is to unmake Madoka's sacrifice, bringing her back?
That's my best guess. Anyone else?

The cross symbolizes the burdern, sins she carryies (saving Madoka no matter what and with that the universe, this is explained in the 3rd movie) trying to undo the curse, to bring down the incubators and giving Madokas life back all at the same time Shes going to trhow herself down the cliff, which means a sacrifice.

I stopped reading the spoiler at the mention of the third movie, didn't catch everything and gonna stop there until the Bluray release. Thanks anyway.

I think it's connected with idiom "bear one's cross" - to keep moving forward to you aim despite any difficulties and DON'T LOOSING UR WAY through that path.
