What i find most disturbing is that the shells each of them are using are the same color as one another's uniforms revealing a deep down desire too have it off with each other
Well, red and green are the colors of the Koopa's shells in Super Mario Bros. Matching the red one with Luigi and the green one with Mario is the only option that makes sense in terms of color contrast, so I don't think it has any hidden meaning.
