Or maybe it's an interpretation of the nue as described in Japanese folklore (although if I understand correctly, nearly every text mentioning it came with a different description, and this is the reason why ZUN came up with the idea of Nue's Seeds of Unidentification that make anything they affect look different depending on the viewer).
