Say what you want, but somebody reading my thought without my permission? Yeah, I wouldn't like that also.
Imagine how it must be to her. It's not something she can turn on and off. It's like having an extra set of ears that doesn't hear sounds, but thoughts. Thoughts everywhere, never ending, endless chatter.

I actually find it kinda neat. I don't need to waste my breath to convey what i want to say. If she can read my mind, it's way easier than i try to speak something and end up being a misunderstanding.

That is why Miko wears her ear muffs. It lets her selectively hear what she wants. So she doesn't hear all the desires of everyone around her.

While Miko has a similar ability that is controlled it is significantly weaker. Satori and Koishi, before her eye closed, could read the minds of people in a vicinity much larger than that of what Miko could ever hope to accomplish. It is the same with Kokoro and Koishi, as of current status.

The catch is that Satoris can only read the thoughts that everyone think at the moment, while Miko can hear their desires from the past, present, and future, making her able to know most(or every) things she needs(and don't need) to know about them. Though similar, they're not something that can be compared, and there's also Eiki's mirror.
Ironically, it's only the people with something to hide that wouldn't want their minds being read. Which incidentally makes Koishi's story sadder as she wanted to be liked even by the worst people.
After all, she didn't reject the thoughts of those around her. It was others who rejected her.

But Miko states that it's a level of reading body language so she can only get so much. Though her level can only be matched by the Yana.
FWP said: And can someone explain the "Autist hat" bit?
Calling someone autistic is a common insult over the web, especially in 4chan and the like. I don't think there's anything more to it. The person's just insulting Koishi's hat.
Miko, Satori, and Eiki (who isn't even using the mirror all the time) seem to be mostly spending time with other powerful supernatural people, all used to strange stuff like mind-reading. Koishi however, as seen here, seems to have liked to go around looking for friends among normals (presumably from the human village). It might be easier to endure when the worst you have to see is terrifying, but somewhat innocent things (à la post #1057712) instead of the constant stream of insults and hate Koishi got.

Have you not played the games? The whole point of Satori's boss-fight is that she uses spellcards that the characters have encountered in the past, and in Reimu and Yukari's scenario, she mentions that Reimu trusted "that oni", presumably Suika. She can clearly read more deeply than surface-level thoughts, given that she has access to memories as well.
As an aside, the guy repeating to himself "Don't think about the embarrassing moment, don't think-" seems alright to me.

That was due to her spell card which induces a form of hypnosis. She can only read what is consciously thought.

I did. Which is why I'm a bit confused when someone mentioned that she can only read the current thoughts of the people around her. Turns out that it's true, she can't read the support's mind(Suika tested it) since they were up in the surface. As for the Recollection and copy spellcard, it's explained in GoM(Grimoire of Marisa, if you don't know) and DS commentary that she used hypnotism to bring the person's traumatic memories to the surface of their mind. Only then she can see their trauma and realized it in her spellcard. That's why she always say the word "trauma" before using the spellcard. That might be the hypnosis. In GoM, it's explicitly stated that Satori can read minds, but not memories.
In short, if we only count the Satoris latent ability, then no, they cannot see others past. But Satori could with the use of hypnotism.
You make a good case for the spell cards being a result of forcing the victim to recall their traumas; I had read GoM, but I took that to be Marisa's explanation of Satori's power rather than a direct word-of-God explanation. You're also right about DS, too, so I'll concede this point to you. However, that doesn't explain how, in Reimu's scenario with Yukari, Satori finds out about Suika ("that oni"), given that Reimu is not thinking of Suika at the time, nor is partnered with her. She further states that Reimu trusts Suika, which lies far beyond her current thoughts and is not the result of an evoked trauma, which suggests to me that she is capable of reading more than surface-level thoughts. Or that ZUN was drunk at the time again. One or the other, really.
I wonder how far the invoking traumas thing goes, though. Is she able to invoke other emotions or memories or what have you, or just traumas? Because if she can go beyond traumas, that effectively allows her to read their past, even though it takes an intermediate step.

I think Satori were referring to Yuugi. She's the one who told Reimu to go check the mansion.

She can't invoke emotions though she can see how the subject feels about certain memories. Koishi can invoke emotions but she can only do in response to stimuli. The trauma thing was stated in SoPM and GoM as reliving memories. Also the it is safe to assume that she can control the hypnotism so that she can see the past through the subject's point of view and also probably the thoughts that occured at the time of those memories. The overall satori race ability is not actually called reading minds but reading hearts so I think it can get much more complicated. Satori just has the ability to manipulate the conscious mind which can mean that she knows more than hypnosis to change what the subject is thinking.

Well, when you think about it, a satori must be used to a constant stream of thoughts from others, and people by their nature are not purely good. So, as a consequence, a satori would be used to 'hearing' all sorts of malice, perversions and post #1057712, and would see them as normal parts of people, just like how we are used to various kinds of faces and voices.
On the other hand, there's no saying how this perception would affect a person's character, aside from two cases which are, honestly, not the most pleasant people to deal with, even though they aren't really at fault.
I think this is the reason why koishi decides to shut her third eye..
Don't think about the embarrassing moment, don't think-Koishi, come out! Your food's getting cold.Awkward.I try to avoid going near her. What's she doing above ground? Is that the mind-reading monster?Autist-hatShe oughta go back underground and stop pestering us.
