Someone was hurt, help is needed. Bystanders took photos and shared it on internet, hoping the likes, shares and tweets will spread the news about the incident. The police received the report and rushed to there, but the victim has died for hours. Some says the criminal is evil, some blame the police and some criticized the government. The criminal was caught and bystanders were praised for spreading the news. But no one have ever wondered why the bystanders took the photos but did not called the police.
Ahahaha, our society might have the greatest joys now. But the past can be considered the nicer generation.
You mean the times it was perfectly justified to stick a sword in someone else's brain just because they believe in a different god from yours? Or the times nobody cared how many women you raped as long as you killed their fathers/husbands?
The past is not glorious, granted the 'morality' of this era is also ugly, just in a different form. The general human morals in the big picture have never been nice, no matter what era of human history you live in.

Morals are set by society, get warped, and misconstrued to what the individual wants to believe. Beliefs that coincide with others become the norm and the individuals become the sheep called people. People has the view that they are always right, do not want any new challenging thought, nor want to change. Then that is what becomes religion. Then religions force the thought away from the individual in order to make more sheep.
Yet people change to what the strongest and loudest view is at the current time. People want acceptance without thought or question. They find this in religion. Thus not questioning it. Thus what is morals? It is what is the loudest view. What is good? It is what are dictated by those morals. What is evil? Anything that changes the ideas of those morals whether it adds or conflicts with those meaning thought.
The current view is always challenged by the previous view. Prosecution based on religion still occurs. The past is never glorious but it is looked upon fondly. The future is always hopeful but is looked upon with fear. The present never wants things to change but always will.
What is true evil and what is true good? These are questions to words that we as humans have created and still have not found an answer. I don't say I know the answer to these questions but I do know one evil and one good. A closed mind is evil since it will always bring destruction of the views of the past. Thought is good since it will change those closed minded views. But for this good to occur effort must placed. You want to change the world then change it! You want the world to be better then better yourself!

Back then? Such a broad term. If you mean the medieval times, well... consumed in war, famine, ignorance and subjugated devalued female individuals, children and so forth... continued like that actually, these trends were ever present in the two millennia year old Bible, four millennia year old Torah, one and a half millennia year old Karan, as well as many old Buddhist, Hindu, and Chinese scriptures alike. Even beyond the once all-consuming religion existed a miserable wretched world of ignorant hate and early demise.

I agree. Believe it or not, people have never been nicer and more philanthropic than they are now. Human is more mature now, he/she knows what their priorities are.
