I thought Cicada's do something similar but not in groups so close to eachother

They do but one is more than likely to see this behavior in certain subspecies of cicadas (where they hibernate in groups), bees, and ladybugs, and fireflies mostly hibernate in the bark when in the larval stage, though I'm not sure if they hibernate in groups.
