Okay, so I was blocked for spoilers. I still want you guys to know, so:
You remember how in End of Eva, Rei stands over everyone the moment they die? She's serving as an angel of death. Therefore, the moment Shinji stepped into Tokyo 3 was the moment he died. I believe the term "screwed" would apply here.
