If the entry for the Mantis is right, its probably the opposite: the Mantis has already had sex with/married him. My own guess is that the Lizard doesn't like the idea of a guy stronger than her being married to a bug.

If we wanted to make it romantic: he came to the forest to learn how to fight more efficiently, but got jiggy with the Mantis. He eventually learned a lot from the overall experience, and he became a fighter of renown as a result. Eventually, the spreading of rumors about him attracted the Lizard.
