Haruhi is the one who controls it, and if she convinces herself that, rather than him being an alternate universe version of "her", he is merely "her" boyfriend and they are having fun at her expense, returning things to normal would be harder.

I guess that would be the equivalent of a crossroads for the story. When, passing all the bases, Kyon and Kyonko end up finally doing a "home run". There'd be a lot of conflicting emotions cropping up there.
Well, basing my projection on the author's characterization of Kyon+Kyonko here and in the sequels, I'm gonna assume that if things ever escalated to that "home run", they wouldn't want to go back to the way things were (as a reader at that point, I definitely wouldn't :D). Ditto for the other genderswaps.
