Actually, I hate the normal situation: When writers are trying to please ALL fans, giving each girl an equal amount of probabilities (or at least, to the 2 or 3 main girls), making the hero act like he is equally attracted to all of them, or worse, portraying him like he was not attracted to any girl at all.
I have always believe most writers are just too coward to make a choice and go for it, and instead they just go for the easy route of ambiguity and equal attraction.
If you didn't like how SAO did it, well look the bright side; I'm pretty sure you almost never have to suffer that.
Fortunately, for the people who thinks like you, most series will pass with the protagonist showing almost no attraction (or equal attraction) for the girls, and those series also will have an ambiguous finale, where he seems attracted to all of them, in a equal level.
