So was I, right now he's looking stylish with that long coat and dress pants. I don't why, but I'm drawn to the the overcoat's patchwork on the inside. The armband makes me think he's part of a disciplinary section of some faction. Not sure about the details since this is first I've seen this.

No really, when you put them beside each other, it's like comparing a good redesign to a bad redesign.
The way they look together is completely relevant. What more were you expecting from the distinct contrast of a character who's lived an aristocratic life and a character who's literally went through hell and high water? It only makes Dante's design more justified. It's not a "bad" design, it's the right one.
You missed the point. I was talking about the "strong-and-silent" type as being cliche. New Vergil has more layers to his character than the Vergil from DMC3.
