There's one thing I still don't get about this game's plot: If everyone are practically soulless androids, how come there are children? Are the androids able to breed, or did the twins grow new androids somewhere and sneaked them out when nobody was looking, and somehow implanted the memory of having children into the adult androids? I mean, we know that the gestalt replicants aged at about the same rate as humans, and could die of old age. And if gestalts are designed to be physical duplicated of humans (although with the occasional error. Apparently the director has stated that the original human Klaine didn't have those extra parts), how come they were born about a thousand years later?

I'm trying really hard to remember what I've read. But there's alot of backstory from the information book Grimoire Nier. And so it's abit fuzzy.
Actually, I'll just skip the backstory.
Only Popola and Devola are andriods/machines. The Replicants are clones, Gestalts are souls (ie, Shades).
Androids are meant to watch over the Replicants until the time for reuniting Gestalts and Replicants begin. And they manage cloning facilities hidden away somewhere.
It's not explicitly stated if Replicants can have babies or not. But it's made clear that Replicants did gain sentience over the 1000 years of purging earth from salt disease and zombie (yes, that's right).
I don't recall if Replicants are sterile or not though. If they are, then andriods do cloning plus falsifying memories. If they aren't, then they're reproducing on their own.

Here's a bit more
The Replicants are not able to reproduce, however Devola and Popola would pretty much tell them they're pregnant, put them to sleep, and then birth them a child with the cloning machine.
