Hey y’all! Hope you guys had a great New Year’s celebration. This is my first post of the year, and I’d like to engage in one of the more complex illustrations that I thought a lot about but didn’t quite get into last year. During last summer on Pinterest, I came across a photo of a Japanese public art installation showcasing a phone booth full of goldfish, and I thought that was cool. At the time, I felt it wasn’t the right moment for me to draw it yet, as I had zero clue on how to work on this. After much thought, I wanted to try a perspective drawing of this concept, and bingo bango, here it is!🐟✨

I asked my friend to take a photo inside any public phone booth she came across while traveling in Japan. A zoomed-in version would be ideal in this situation because drawing the whole phone booth wouldn’t look as detailed as you would see in the position that I drew. The goldfish would just be a blob of orange and yellow and unrecognizable in a small canvas size. 🤭

The trickiest part was figuring out how to present the water medium inside the phone booth. It took quite a while experimenting with the ideal transparency and appropriate color to represent this. If it was too opaque, it would cover up the street view. If it was too clear, it would look like the fish were flying in the air. This is what I ended up with as the final render.
