Rural public bathhouses are apparently another thing in Japan that have been hit hard by the rapid rise in fuel costs. They were already in decline because of population decline, so many have been operating either with barely a profit or at a loss before the fuel cost jump. The problem is apparently these public bathhouses are one of the last few major social hubs for these communities, so their disappearance tends to have a major negative impact.
