    Hang in There, Kogasa-san 547

The Japanese clothing was fairly impressive, so I managed to turn her into Tsukihi-chan. Well, any girl would be nervous if greeted by some middle-aged guy she didn't know! Ah, but wait, it was an umbrella that greeted her! :-)

This is what yesterday's Nue-chan was like.
And while I'm at it ...

Was it was another use of superfluous Japanese by a con-goer who didn't actually know Japanese? Possibly Asian, so Kogasauthor didn't notice.

"Touhou"+informal sentence ending "da" is hardly a particularly strong indication of any Japanese fluency.

(Good god; this Con arc scares the living daylights out of me. American con-goers, to an anime convention no less, are hardly something we should show someone else... I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop somewhere, or if Kogasauthor is too polite to draw a comic about anything less than kosher he saw.)

A bit of context for this strip:

The person that Hitoshi is talking to in the 4koma was the "really excited Japanese lady" we met at Anime Boston and Hitoshi drew her appearance spot-on. I assume that she was visiting Anime Boston for some event or something because when she happened upon the first Touhou photoshoot, she was so overjoyed to take pictures of the cosplayers.

She also politely entered the Touhou panel room while we were setting up. None of us apparently knew enough Japanese to ask her to wait outside with everyone else, so she stayed around until the panel started.

    Also, her enthusiasm scared me.

This. I am preparing to cringe every time he makes another strip about the con.

To be honest, I'm not sure how much worse Anime Boston is than the more casual conventions in Japan.

And Sefam, you can post comments to the pixiv page for the comic if you want to thank him yourself. :V

I can't really speak Japanese that much. And Kogasa-san doesn't speak much english himself from what I gathered.

Don't worry. Mizuki-san never made it to PAX East, so everything was okay all weekend.

Her Japanese clothing left an impression, so somehow or other, I drew her as Tsukihi-chan.

Well, I guess any girl would freak out at some old guy she didn't know talking to her! Oh, wait—it was the umbrella who talked to her! :-)

    Here's how yesterday's Nue-chan looked:
    http://p.twipple.jp/ezGkL
    And while I'm at it:
    http://p.twipple.jp/qScTF

Reader-added tags include "Good for you for surprising(?) someone, Kogasa-san", "It's not as if you weren't suspicious", and "Hunky Momiji" (based on the second Twipple link).

The survey today plays off the guest avatar of the day:

Ah, I remember her. She was called "Yu From Japan!," as her ID identified her as. She sang wonderfully well during Karaoke. I couldn't believe the Russian man in the purple suit beat her, though. Anyway, she was super adorable! This is a very accurate depiction. Though she was a bit strange, she was well loved by everyone.

Geez, what's with all the hate and negativity? Maybe he should've just been left in his room for the duration of the weekend so he didn't have a chance to interact with those filthy, disgusting Americans.

Have you seen Mizuki-san's normal work yet?

Bronako and Sefam's heads have appeared! Poor Kogasa-san, she managed to surprise someone successfully, even though she didn't want to. "Yu From Japan" was a fun person, though, I don't think I spent too much time around her.

Wait, "Hunky Momiji?" And I'm the only Momiji in the second pic. Um... uh...

(The Momiji in the strip from two days ago was a different cosplayer; I didn't have props, and my costume had long hair)

If Mizuki-san didn't enjoy himself and the con, do you really thing that he'd be creating an entire arc about his trip?

Thanks! Haha, nothing better than someone enjoying themselves. It sounded like she didn't expect Touhou to make it to Amurika.

My Japanese is mostly "Domo Arigato" and "Gomen Nasai" (hope I spelled them right XD) I plan on getting rosetta stone when i get the cash so when I go to anime conventions I can at least talk to people from other countries to make them feel welcome.

The larger the cluster of people that come together, the more likely they are to exhibit their stereotypes.

Wouldn't be surprised if she showed up at our country's anime conventions and see our Touhou gathering. Then again, I'd be in the same situation as her (only with less squealing).

I, for one, am looking forward to see Mizuki-san's take on the Kanako cosplayer.

Butt Scratcher, Marco Polo, The Game, What Time Is It, etc. etc. etc.

And then there's the Hetalia fans, who have a negative sense of awareness and sensitivity, including (but not limited to!) running over cosplayers in heavy, awkwward costumes and knocking them over, using country flags as picnic blankets, and doing massive Seig Heil poses in public.

This strip should be hard translated and made a required reading for every western anime fan that insists in peppering his words with Japanase terms. It's not kawaii, it only makes they look like kuso baka.

The real question is, is any of that specific to Americans or anime cons? There are jerks and jackasses in every country and every fandom.

I think it's more along the lines of, "It's OK when it's someone from another country embarrassing themselves, but please don't make America look bad."

I said it back when it was the bondage scene, but while it's fine and all when you're seeing people in their culture doing things that are strange for their culture, but you know what normal is for their culture, but when you see it's your culture being portrayed only from the perspective of people doing things they would NEVER do under normal circumstances, you start to cringe and say "Americans really aren't like that, except in this very specific limited circumstance for this specific niche crowd!"

Sounds about right indeed. However, unless the next strip looks something like the one I read about a guy's experience at a Anime-con that he dressed as the main character from Assassin's Creed who got his body crushed by a High-Weight female and had to utilize a cane to walk around after the incident. The girl took off and no charges were filed.
    ---

So if it's anything like that, then there may be embarrassment for you guys. Depending on your sensitivity of the situations.
