Did you consider what order they were uploaded in, or whether it was a Contributor-level user or higher posting them? This version is inferior to the previous one because it has more image artifacts. It has no advantages over the previous post except for slightly different commentary, which can just be tacked on to the commentary of the previous post with the source link (look at the posts tagged multi-source commentary for examples). If your post was both uploaded and approved before the other one, or if the duplicate were posted by a Contributor or higher, then both of them would be active since posts aren't supposed to be flagged just for being duplicates.

Make sure you're paying attention to the Similar tab on the upload screen; it's extremely likely the parent post would show up there. Just because you end up uploading a duplicate doesn't mean you have to post it.

I misread this as "are alternate not allowed", and I got reminded of that really weird Youtube serie about false angels, people seeing things in the TV, and kids being abducted.
