People say don't point your finger at cat but this is the one trick that I've found to work the best. Reach out your hand, index finger raised, then slowly approach the cat with your finger at around their eye level. 9 out of 10 times curiosity gets the better of them and they start sniffing it to check which gives you a better chance at not scaring htem away.
