Guess they thought it would make Kiritsugu's dad seem too human if he actually hugged his son in relief when he saw that the kid was safe (another thing they edited out was that his dad already had everything they needed to flee packed and was only still at the island because he was waiting for Kiritsugu).

Thanks for the clarification. Personally I think either route would have worked in its own way. To show Kiritsugu's dad really did love him while the man was still a monster could've been interesting too.
