RX-78-1 プロトタイプガンダムは、地球連邦軍「作戦V」において最初に完成したモビルスーツであり、象徴的なRX-78-2ガンダムの直接の前身となった。黒・白・赤のカラーリングが特徴で、足首と膝部の装甲を簡素化して軽量化を図り、高速・近接戦闘を重視した設計となっていた。コアブロックシステムや携帯ビームライフルといった重要技術を先駆けて搭載したものの、サイド7へのジオン軍攻撃の際に破壊され、その後部品として流用された。

The RX-78-1 Prototype Gundam was the first completed mobile suit in the Earth Federation's "Operation V," serving as the direct predecessor to the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam. Distinguished by its black, white, and red color scheme, it featured simplified armor on the ankles and knees to reduce weight and prioritize high-speed, close-quarters combat. Although it pioneered key technologies like the Core Block System and the portable beam rifle, the unit was destroyed during the Zeon attack on Side 7 and subsequently used for spare parts.
