The get-up is similar, but no defining feature that points to Altair.

Also, Altair had done away with the "remove ring finger" thing once he became the head of the Assassin Order. At least, that's as far as I remember.

That's correct. When Altair took over as head of the Order, he believe the removal of the mid finger? or ring finger? is to extreme so the idea of branding the finger was established.

I seem to recall it was necessary to remove the finger to have the blade extend through the hole left when making a fist, and it was new design that let assassins keep their finger by allowing the blade to extend past it.
At least that's how some pre-game blurb introduced the new da Vinci-created hidden blade.

Yes that is true as well, but the removal of the mid or ring finger was also a sign that he/she is officially part of the Creed. That tradition was soon changed with the branding of the mid or ring finger.
