Meiling is one of my favorite characters so I always enjoy these few and far between doujin that dont just make her a joke character.

"Few and far between"? Seems like half the SDM-focused mangas coming out now are Meiling-as-badass-heroine.

It really only seems to be a matter of whether they are supposed to be gag comics or not (and the gag ones tend to be the same ones that reduce Remilia to uu~, Sakuya to PAD chief, and Patchy to a hikikomori, so it's not even just Meiling...)

Is Meiling trying to imply that Sakuya was lucky that Remilia manipulated her fate, or that Sakuya only passed because Remilia wasn't manipulating her fate?

I have to agree. Lately it seems like we've been seeing a major rise in positive Meiling-centric pieces.

She's generally only depicted as a joke anymore when she's just there as a side character. But even that's still pretty common.

Well, NWS was pretty much nailed it. The most clear example would be Kaguya being a NEET.

Personally, I do like Meiling as a joke character (Wait, don't just burn up yet! Read the rest). Because she is just like an epitome of older kung fu heroes. Let say Jackie Chen and Jet Li are well known for their funny antics but still kicking ass (Again, in older movies). But, of course it is so rare (not none) to find canon Meiling. Artists are often putting her as a sandbag or just pull her as an all-dominant character.Putting her as an all serious-like character just reduce her to just being an average nerd shonen anime/manga protags. And she lost her uniqueness, which all in all not to my preferences. But oh well, not I'm complaining tho...

Shin-Houin, I actually agree.

A balance between the two is better than one or the other. I mean, either way can be good if it's done well, and I have enjoyed both kinds on numerous occasions.

But a happy medium is still the best.

The year of the dragon is Meiling's year after all. She sure deserves it.

Seems to be the latter. Meiling would have stopped her if Rmeilia had been interfering with Sakuya's fate.

Anyway on the topic of Meiling I like a bit of a mix as well so as far as my fav Meiling artists are the ones that capture her overall kindness with with the occasional bout of buffoonery but don't make her appear weak and useless.

So maybe I exaggerated a little. I said that because when I first started reading Touhou doujin the majority of SDM centric manga I read either had Meiling as either a joke character or some random background character. Indeed though recently (since I discovered this site) I have found a lot more cool/big sister Meiling manga.

Meiling is so awesome! I love her the best! Meisaku rocks!
