Fun fact: The first artificial colors were made aut of tar, that was a byproduct of the production of coke (the coal struff not the softdrink) and coal gas. The German BASF ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BASF ) was one of the first factories to produce anilin based colors.
The petrochemical production came later.
