I might be misremembering but I think it was something that the story implied that it was even darker than that. Like the mother wasn't well enough to carry a baby so she convinced the daughter to do it her stead.

I mean, that alone is ok (considering the stuff we can find here), but the two are hinted to be some pretty messed up individuals. I haven't been up to date since the story is so slow, but if it's revealed they have killed before I wouldn't even be surprised.
